Why I wrote this book
Tucker tried to tell me for three months.
In the fall of 1996 my tabby Tucker stopped jumping up to the kitchen windowsill. For fourteen years he'd waited there every afternoon for my husband's truck. I told myself what everybody tells themselves. He's just getting old.
Three months later he was gone. His kidneys. Our old country vet, Doc Pruitt, took off his glasses and said something I have never forgotten.
"He's been telling you for months, Maggie. You just didn't know the language yet. Cats don't complain. They change."
That afternoon I bought a dollar-and-a-half spiral notebook and started writing down every cat in my house. Her weight on Sunday. How much she drank. The litter box. The little things that changed. I taught second grade for thirty-one years, and for thirty of them I fostered cats for our shelter out of my kitchen, my barn and my back porch. More than three hundred of them.
That entry caught Captain's diabetes early. He lived six more good years. Today there are forty-one notebooks on my kitchen shelf, and my daughter Emily finally said, Mom, these can't just sit there. So we turned them into this book.
If you found me through my videos, you already know a few of these signs. The book has all the rest, in the order you'll need them, so you never have to learn it the way I did.
